Community has always been at the heart of humanity. Ever since the first hominids sat in a circle thumping their chests and howling at the moon. Through song, mythical stories, chant, mantra, prayer, breath, music, and meditation - we have found ways to stimulate feelings of wellbeing, harmony and belonging. At X+Why it is part of our mission to unite, inspire and amplify purpose-driven businesses, and in doing so, create a supportive community of likeminded enterprise, committed to using their creativity and skills to making the world a more collaborative, sustainable and socially responsible place to live.

Community (noun): ‘A group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common. The condition of sharing or having certain attitudes and interests in common.

Today such sights are less common, especially in our more nuclear urban environments. However community need not disappear altogether, it has simply changed its face. At X+Why it is part of our mission to unite, inspire and amplify purpose-driven businesses, and in doing so, create a supportive community of likeminded enterprise, committed to using their creativity and skills to making the world a more collaborative, sustainable and socially responsible place to live.

The backbone of a strong community has always been: a shared purpose, rituals, story-telling, connectedness, trust, interaction, identity and shared experiences. We achieve this through 3 key Cornerstones:  conversation, collaboration, and fun! At our spaces, you and your team are not just another cog in the wheel of an uninspired building, but a fundamental part of our greater brand mission. And you will find us wholly unashamed of our grand visions for actively implementing a new paradigm of responsible capitalism globally, spearheaded by movements like the B Corporation.

These are just a few of the ways we foster engagement both in our internal and external communities across our sites:

Shared Experiences

{{divider}}

With a strong events programme encompassing everything from wellness, tech, business, strategy, crafting and volunteering, we have a holistic supply of experiential fulfilment permanently at your fingertips.

{{divider}}

This extends to our local area, and at Christmas we held our first ever market stall event, which was packed with boutique local brands, mulled wine and nibbles.

Some highlights over the last year of life at X+Why have been our start-up Accelerator Demo Day with Escape The City (who have been changing lives and helping escapees since 2009), The Craftivist Collective book launch and live podcast recording, the Great Education Panel Debate featuring an all-star cast of Industry Leaders, and Holly Branson’s Podcast Recording with Simon Sinek, discussing his latest book - The Infinite Game.

Keeping the group in the loop

Our Newsletter is so much more than just the news, it’s a monthly source of inspiration, tales and confessions of the highs and lows of startup life via our interviews and podcast, causes for celebration, calls for support, life-changing employment prospects, enticing giveaways, and stoic wisdom. Every month we send out newsletters to our wider community, along with an exclusive copy for our members-only.

Growing Better Businesses

{{divider}}

Through activities such as our WhyB programme we help companies put their processes under the microscope and find motivation, value and purpose in committing to better business. As a means of ensuring that companies are walking the walk, as opposed to just talking the talk, The B Corporation Certification can be a lengthy process. That’s where we come in - providing dedicated sessions with B Leaders to help de-mystify the process, and encourage like-minded businesses to get to know each-other over work, coffee and cake.

Collaborations

{{divider}}

A strong community ensures that connections happen organically, with coworkers truly co-working as opposed to just sitting next to each-other while they work -  pursuing new business ideas together, contracting within the community, sharing experiences and knowledge that help them to develop their enterprise and being able to draw on the collective intelligence of the network for brainstorms and strategising.

One of our founding members and independent consultants, Richard Johnson, received his latest project with change-making innovators - Ashoka, via a conversation on the stairs of our building. It’s well-suited and organic connections like this that are built into the DNA of each of our buildings.

Conversations

{{divider}}

We take the time to understand what’s really important to each of our members. This allows us to facilitate and create opportunities for collaborations. At our Whitechapel space, our dedicated membership manager, Leah, is an intuitive and friendly face who knows if someone’s feeling isolated, needs help with a project, wants to celebrate a success or needs to find focus.

Breakfasts

{{divider}}

Members Breakfasts are a chance for newbies to introduce themselves and share what’s important to them. There’s nothing like carbs and coffee to get a conversation going and as its on the house - we’re always guaranteed a good turn out!

{{divider}}

Charity

{{divider}}

As well as a few of our members independently running their own charitable events and outreach activities, we work with local organisations such as Whitechapel Mission to provide a few of our own. Whether your skills are running, cooking or event-organising, there’s an opportunity available for you to get stuck into.

Benefits + Perks

{{divider}}

Our intranet is home to many juicy deals and discounts from our local partners and network including Mindful Chek UK, Oddbox, DAME and Car Hire by The Out. Members simply have to logon and show their virtual membership card to claim our personal array of deals and discounts.

Our Savvy App

{{divider}}

The x+why app makes it easy to access all the main features of both the website and intranet on the go. Sign up to events, post a message or event, peruse our members or access a guide to our buildings at the click of a button.

The Manifesto

{{divider}}

The goal and mission statement of our space is what attracts our members to us. Every new member that joins us signs a commitment to better business, based on the Triple Bottom Line of combining purpose, people and planet with profit.

{{divider}}

When you bring businesses and individuals together by connecting their more deeply seated values, you foster an environment that recognises that we are more alike than different, and encourage collaboration over competition in achieving our common aims. This is what makes spaces like ours unique - our commitment to purpose, fulfilment and doing good. All things that will see both us and the communities that we serve grow throughout the implementation of the next paradigm of responsible capitalism.
