B1G1 is a social enterprise and non-profit organisation with a simple mission: ‘to create a world that is full of giving’. B1G1 is helping businesses to make the world a better place through their feature called ‘Giving Stories’. Giving stories allow businesses to embed giving into their everyday business operations by linking a charitable act with a business action. Here at x+why, we have created three giving stories that take place every day because of our members choosing to be a part of the x+why community.

We plant a tree for every new x+why member

For every new member that joins x+why, we plant a tree in the world. We have chosen this giving story as trees are highly beneficial for the environment due to their air cleaning nature and ability to absorb carbon dioxide. This giving story is a global project, meaning that trees will be planted all over the world due to our impacts. Global projects allow for our donations to be distributed globally to local projects in different countries.

Since we launched our giving stories in October 2022, x+why has planted 1292 trees for new members. Of these trees, 1098 will survive into adulthood to fulfil their estimated potential of carbon dioxide absorption. This means that so far 23,058kg of carbon dioxide will be absorbed every year because of memberships at x+why. With many buildings planned to open in the future the number of x+why members will continue to grow resulting in many more trees being planted. We are aiming for 5000 trees in 2023 which would result in the absorption of 89,250kg of carbon dioxide!

We provide a meal to a family in need for every member social you attend

Every time x+why members attend one of our member socials, we provide a meal to a community in need. This giving story project is managed by ‘The Wiggly Worm’ a Gloucestershire-based charity that supports local families living in food poverty. They do so by providing nutritious meals to disadvantaged families whilst also teaching children in these families how to replicate their healthy and affordable recipes at home. So far, as a result of members attending our socials, we have provided 57 meals to people in need. By the end of 2023, we are aiming to have provided 365 meals.

We provide a day of access to clean water for every member response to our surveys

We will provide access to clean water for every member response to our quarterly surveys. The United Nations General Assembly has explicitly recognised access to clean water as a human right, yet 1 in 3 people do not have access to safe drinking water. This giving story is also a global project, meaning that our donations will be spread to people worldwide that lack access to clean water. With the ever growing community of x+why members, this could be our most impactful giving story. We currently have around 2000 x+why members which, if every member responded to our 4 surveys a year, could equate to clean drinking water being provided to 8000 people. If all new members that join x+why also responded to our surveys, imagine how much impact we could have!

Our goal at x+why is to inspire our community to get involved with B1G1 by setting up giving stories so that by the end of 2023, the x+why community will be working towards all 17 of the United Nation Sustainable Development Goals through B1G1 giving stories.
