About The Area

{{divider}}

Spitalfields has a rich history steeped in British mysticism. The land belonged to St Mary Spital, a priory or hospital (a lodging for travellers run by a religious order) erected on the east side of Bishopsgate thoroughfare in 1197, from which its name is thought to derive.

The area’s historic affiliation with the silk industry was established by a French protestant family (the Huguenots), who first arrived as refugees. This laid the foundations for what would become a thriving area of trade and handmade goods. The famous Spitalfields market receives around 25,000 visitors every week, having been established after Charles I gave a licence for ‘flesh, foul and roots’ to be sold in what was once ‘Spittle Fields’.

Spitalfields is the ideal location for energising a company of any size given its proximity to some of the most lively and flourishing areas of the city. This side of town epitomises the ethos of ‘work hard, play hard’, with a more flexible range of budgets than you might find further west. It’s for this reason that many of the city’s best start-up programmes and incubators tend to locate their events and programmes near the area, including Tech Stars, IncuBus and Launch 22.
